Bevan's 8-Day Fast
In May 2018 I contracted a mild form of shingles. As someone who believes themselves to be extremely fit and very health conscious this came as somewhat of a surprise. However when I sat down and thought about it there'd probably been a few signs in the last 18 months that things weren't quite as tip-top as they could have been. In fact, things hadn't been quite right since Kona 2016 - I asked more of myself in that race than I'd ever done before, and when I had knee surgery in April this year it was the straw that broke the camel's back...
I'd heard a lot about the positives of fasting, but was particularly interested in the 'autophagy' benefits. What's autophagy? Translated literally it means 'self-eating', but it's "a normal physiological process in the body that deals with the destruction of cells. It maintains homeostasis or normal functioning by protein degradation and turnover of the destroyed cell organelles for new cell formation. During fasting the process of autophagy is upscaled and increased". Sounded perfect, that's what my body needed, a clear-out and an immune system reboot!
