Bevan McKinnon - Director/Owner of FITTER Coaching
Bevan McKinnon is a high-performance endurance coach working with athletes globally, from age-groupers through to professional athletes.
He works with only a limited number of athletes in order to ensure that each receives a fully individualised programme built from the ground up. Programs are designed around their physiology, performance history, lifestyle and long-term goals. There are no templates or pre-built systems. Every decision is made with the individual in mind.
Bevan is directly involved in every step of the process. Training is not prescribed and left to run, it is continuously shaped through ongoing, collaborative communication. This enables real-time adjustment based not only on performance data, but on how the athlete is actually responding to the work.
At the core of his philosophy is the understanding that athletes are complex, not predictable systems. The same training stimulus does not always produce the same outcome, which is why he prioritises ongoing interpretation and adjustment over rigid adherence to a fixed plan.
While data plays an important role, it is never used in isolation. It is interpreted alongside subjective feedback, fatigue patterns, life stress, and broader physiological responses to training load. This integrated approach allows for more precise decision-making, particularly when athletes are operating close to their limits.
Bevan’s track record of 20+ years reflects the consistency of this approach. He has guided athletes to over 20 professional victories and titles, including national and international 70.3 wins, Asia-Pacific IRONMAN titles and a top-five finish in the men’s professional race at the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona. His work extends beyond triathlon, with athletes also achieving success in elite marathon competition.
As an athlete, Bevan has won ITU Long Course World Championship titles, IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship age-group titles and Kona World Championship age-group titles. These experiences inform his coaching, particularly in understanding the demands of racing at the highest level and the execution required to succeed.
Bevan works with athletes who are serious about performance and prepared to engage deeply in the process. His coaching is best suited to those seeking a highly individualised, hands-on approach where feedback, communication and adaptability are central to success.
Bevan is an IRONMAN University Certified Coach, Triathlon NZ Level 3 Accredited Coach, Bike NZ Coach and a qualified NETFIT Strength and Conditioning Coach.
